Raisin Cakes
“The Lord loves the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love cakes of raisins. They shall eat, but not be satisfied.” Hosea 3:1, 4:10
I was struck by this verse because of how utterly silly it is. I say it’s silly because it seems improbable that Israel really loved raisin cakes more than God. But when I think about it, I am just like Israel because the things I choose to prioritize or desire over God are just silly when you consider the majesty of our Creator.
When we get down to it, I am truly not satisfied by the things this world has to offer. I may think it will satisfy, but ultimately I know it will not. When things of little value are sought after, the result only ends in disappointment and emptiness. The more I indulge in the crumbs of life’s blessings, the more my understanding is marred, and my love for Jesus and for people is weakened. We need to be careful and diligent not to allow trivialities to distract us from a life of abundance in God’s beautiful plan.
God has not forgotten about our needs, and he gives us exactly what is necessary for each day, and if we allow ourselves to be content with him and his plans for us, we truly will be satisfied.
“Restlessness and impatience change nothing except our peace and joy. Peace does not dwell in outward things, but in the heart prepared to wait trustfully and quietly on him who has all things safely in his hands.” ~Elizabeth Elliot
