DEEPER STILL: Week Eleven
Patterns of Destruction
Matthew 7:13
“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. “
Reflections
In today’s passage, we are reminded that there are two gateways we can walk through in this life (Matthew 7:13-14). One is broad, the other narrow—but both may seem to offer similar experiences: pleasure, disappointment, striving, rest, relationships, and satisfaction. So does it really matter which gate we choose?
Jesus describes the broad gate as enticing—”many enter it.” (v. 13). It may seem to promise fulfillment, but it has only one destination: destruction. The world is full of examples of this path—self-absorption, addictions, broken relationships, anxiety, and ultimately, a restless heart wondering, “Is this all there is?” Any pleasure found here is temporary, fleeting at best (Hebrews 11:25).
On the other hand, the narrow gate is described in a way that isn’t immediately appealing: “Narrow is the gate and difficult is the way.” (v. 14). The word narrow implies restriction, constraint, and limitation—things that can feel uncomfortable and outside of our control. Scripture doesn’t sugarcoat it; following Christ requires surrender and trust. Yet, unlike the broad path, this road leads to true life.
John 10:9-11 tells us that Jesus is the door—the only way to salvation. Entering through Him is not about striving or religious effort, but about grace. It is not our own goodness that secures eternal life, but Christ’s finished work on the cross (Ephesians 2:8-9). Walking the narrow path isn’t about earning our salvation; rather, it’s the evidence of a transformed heart.
So we must ask ourselves: Are we willing to walk through the narrow gate, surrendering destructive patterns and trusting in Christ alone? Jesus not only saves us, but also reshapes us, replacing old habits with new patterns of life (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Do your daily patterns reflect a path of temporary satisfaction leading to destruction—or momentary difficulty with eternal hope?
Prayer
Lord, I recognize the patterns in my life that do not lead to the life You desire for me. Today, I choose to trust You and walk the narrow path, knowing that in You alone is true hope and eternal life. Shape my heart, renew my mind, and guide my steps so that my life reflects Your truth.
