DEEPER STILL: Week Forty-Eight

Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-Control

1 Cor. 6:19

“Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?”

Reflections

For believers in Jesus, suffering is not just an affliction—it becomes a classroom of trust and surrender. Whether in seasons of ease or agony, the truth is, “You are not your own; you were bought with a price” (1 Cor. 6:19–20). This belonging is not only a theological truth—it is a foundational truth. It means that God’s ownership includes God’s care, provision, and sustaining grace, even when we are tossed by the storms of life.

We often connect the promise of Acts 16:31—“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved”—primarily with eternal salvation, but it is also true in the midst of our affliction. He saves us in the storm, but not always from the storm. He saves us by sustaining, carrying, reshaping, and holding us fast by His Spirit.

Trauma has a way of making us believe we are on our own, and our pain justifies any action we choose. We may feel entitled to lash out, withdraw into bitterness, or justify harshness because “we’ve been hurt.” But Scripture calls us to surrender to the reflection of these fruits of the Holy Spirit—faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

The fruit of Faithfulness causes us to remain steadfast in our trust and commitment to walk in His ways, even when every emotion in us screams otherwise.

The fruit of Gentleness helps us choose tenderness instead of retaliation. This is His work of softening our responses so that we do not wound others in the midst of our pain.

The fruit of Self-Control helps us refuse to allow our emotions, fears, or pain to dictate our actions. It is a conscientious effort to walk in the Spirit no matter what.

These fruits are not produced by willpower—they are the Spirit’s work in us. We have a responsibility to cooperate with Him, especially when circumstances make surrender to His Spirit difficult. Our pain does not exempt us from obedience. Instead, it becomes the very environment where His Spirit in us can shine most brightly.

Our suffering becomes sacred when we learn to see it as a journey to reflect the fruit of His Spirit in us, especially the fruits of faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

So today, ask yourself, “What response best reflects His Spirit alive in me?

Prayer

Lord, in the midst of my pain, please remind me to be sensitive to Your Spirit. Please help me surrender to Your reflection of faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
