DEEPER STILL: Week Fifty
Progress Over Perfection
I Thessalonians 5:16-18
“Rejoice always, Pray without ceasing, In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
Reflections
We are called to give thanks in everything—even in what feels like the smallest steps. I recently smiled reading a devotion that listed “small steps” as choosing forgiveness, resisting temptation, and turning the other cheek. Those are certainly steps of obedience, but let’s be honest: some days they do not feel small at all. When we’re walking through trauma, even putting one foot in front of the other can feel impossible. So if the steps ahead seem too big right now, start smaller. Give yourself permission to notice and thank God for even the tiniest movements toward hope.
Did you read a devotion today? Did your mind turn toward God, even briefly? Did you hold back from saying something hurtful in a moment of frustration? Did you get dressed for the first time in weeks, or simply breathe a prayer when your heart felt heavy? These moments may seem insignificant, but they are evidence—quiet, sacred evidence—of the Spirit’s work in your life. No matter how small they appear, celebrate those victories. Heaven notices them, and so should you.
Sometimes we slip into an all-or-nothing mentality, especially in seasons of deep pain. Trauma often whispers that one misstep means we should give up entirely. But Romans 3:23 reminds us that we all fall short of God’s glory—every single one of us. Failure is not final. When we stumble, we seek forgiveness, rise again, and move forward with grace. Progress, not perfection, is what shapes a life of faith.
This shift in mindset—focusing on victories, even small ones—reshapes how we see God’s hand in our lives. Those quiet wins make room for worship and courage. They allow us to sing of God’s mercies like David (Ps. 89:1), dance before the Lord in freedom (2 Sam. 6:14), or face fiery trials with unshaken trust like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (Dan. 3:18). There are times when we choose to declare our devotion to God “even if” He does not deliver us from the trial.
Joy is not merely the result of progress; it becomes a source of strength for the journey ahead. When we intentionally celebrate progress, we fuel our faith, steady our hearts, and remind ourselves that God is still at work. So pause today and recognize where God has claimed victory in your life—especially in the smallest of places.
Is your mind celebrating progress, or is it stuck in the mindset of failure?
Prayer
Lord, teach me to pause and rejoice in the progress You have made in my life. Help me not to rush past the victories, but to honor them with gratitude.
